When to Reach Out to a Recruiter

You’re browsing through job postings and aren’t finding anything that appeals to your interests or fits your background. At this point, most candidates would get frustrated and possibly give up their search. However, there is another option you may not have considered, and that is reaching out to a recruiter. Reaching out to a recruiter, even if they don’t currently have a position for you, can be surprisingly helpful in your job search and networking.

Connecting says a lot about you

As a recruiter, I can attest that it speaks volumes about you as a candidate when you make that extra effort to meet a recruiter in person. Your motivation makes me want to help you find the perfect job.

The next time you come across a so-so job posting, think twice before you exit out. If the job is in your preferred industry, look for contact information, and contact the recruiter to arrange a time to meet. Bring your resume, and be prepared to expand on your experience.

Recruiters find out so much more about a candidate just by having a casual conversation over coffee. It allows us to discover your personality, energy and demeanor, to see what excites you and makes you tick, something that is much harder to do over the phone. These visual and conversational clues enable your recruiter to better assess a culture fit, a huge factor for companies these days.

A face-to-face meeting allows you to ask questions, get some feedback about your job search, make a new contact, and add more tools to your job search toolbox.

More than a name and a number

In the past, I’ve had candidates reach out to me, requesting to meet for coffee or in person. It’s a simple fact that a recruiter is much more likely to remember someone they’ve met with in person for a position versus a candidate they spoke with over the phone.

The last time I met with a candidate for coffee, we made recommendations to improve her resume, suggested networking groups to get into, and offered advice on career paths. Recruiters have access to hundreds of industry contacts, giving them the ability to get your resume in front of decision makers.

Doherty recruiters are always trying to place the most qualified candidates, whether it be for an existing or a future opportunity, we’re here to help you find the right position.
